If you are primarily solo'ing I'd at least put several points into magi shielding very first thing (10 personally)...

And I think STA is the best while solo, but you can always go dps ... personal preference. But yeah, after that AGI first, huge dps gain compared to STR... but that extra 32 STR does help from being overburdened when at low levels

i soloed quite a bit and i never considered putting points in sta or magi's shielding.. i made it to 80 just fine (twice on a warlock). first time was with an eof fabled and fully mastered warlock and second was with a plev'd toon with shitty disruption (spells) and subjugation (for roots).

obviously easier with the fabled out warlock than the plev'd one, but its manageable.

but youre right, its personal preference.

Also speaking from personal preference, Ive never considered spec'ing STA line, and have never had problems soloing.

While you are level'ing STA is certainly not shit, lol. I'm not saying you have to have it either. If you are an experienced mage of any kind you'll do fine regardless of your spec.

But I certainly found that 10 points in Magi Shielding helps a ton while leveling up. STA gives more than just MIT, the casting skills helps a lot because low level gears tends not to have skills on them, and the focus helps a lot for completing spells when being beaten on. And manaward or whatever the end line is called literally saved me from dying dozens of times, not to mention the easy of just training stuff instead of invising and going slow, etc.

Now, it's still all personal preference, but somewhere in the 20's with like 40 AAs I switched things up to mana shield/STA and it helped me solo more effectively. After raiding at 70 when RoK came out I switched back to STA/Magi's shielding for solo'ing in RoK and again it helped me out a lot.

To each his own, do whatever you want. But if you've never tried the warlock tank spec, don't knock it, it's worthwhile.

P.S. AGI is high value really for more than dps... casting faster means you get your stuns/daze/root off faster, finish spells quicker (less interrupts when being beat on), and the reuse means your stuns and roots come back up quicker.
