Your raid leader may be a dick, but using the training dummy is a viable method for improving and tracking your character. In particular, the training dummy:
- Gives you an accurate baseline DPS
- Allows you to experiment with different spell priorities (the best casters don't cast in a fixed order, but cast the most important and available spell or spell combo)
- Allows you to test the effect of different equipment (although raid buffs make this less useful)
- Allows you to test the effect of different procs
- Allows you to show progress
Talk to your raid leader. Does he think your raid DPS is lacking? If so, you need to work on raising it, and starting with the training dummy is one option. You should be able to identify specific pieces of equipment you need to improve your DPS, specific changes to your spell priority, etc to raise your DPS.
