I walked up to the guy in the magical freeport tower of magic and spoke with him. He gave me two port spells and sold me some crap to use them. Viola, I can now port to Gfay. So my question is, whats all this talk about "portal quests" and why didn't I have to do anything to get the spells?

He should ask you to do some more research or something for him. He doesn't actually give you a quest though. But what you need to do is go to the Gfay, Antonica, and Commonland KoS wizard spires and harvest scrolls that appear near them. The scrolls are right near the spires, turn your particle effects up to see them, they're like large brown scrolls.

After you've collected all three, go back to the portal trainer and he will give you port spells to Antonica and CL.

As he gave you GFay already you can skip going to the spire to collect the scroll in GFay.
Just need to hit up CL and Ant.
