How do I work out what my spell damage cap is?

I am level 55 with 280 spell damage modifier, is that anywhere near cap?

I know the normal stat cap is 15 x level + 20, but is that also true for spell damage modifier?

Spell damage caps at 50% of the base damage of your spell.

So if your spell hits for 1000 the cap for that spell is 500.

Wizards don't worry about capping spell damage.

Thank you. I think I understand.

Ice Comet hits for about 3000 - 5000 base damage so I guess spell damage is well into the 1000's so, ye, no need to worry about the cap :D

You need to worry if you have 100% crit and 1500 spell damage ;)
(I am interested to know how you can do that)

1500 spell damage is no where near capped for most of our spells.

Who has 1500 spell damage anyway? If I butchered my gear choices apart and focused on all spell damage I still may not hit 1500.

I can get 1400, but thats with gear I never use/nor would raid with.
I usually sit at 1100
