What should a wizard be trying to get for gear when they hit 72?

Should they purchase mastercraft or is there a better solution?

What is the next logical step in gear after 'this solution'?

The next logical step is to learn how to rate gear, because a fish will help you for one day, but learning how to get the fish will nourish you for a lifetime.

Most mastercrafted stuff can easily be replaced by doing some instances or even rok/tso questing, so don't get that shit. The only thing you might want to think about is that mastercrafted Dizok Robe with 5 fastcast and symbols with 2crit/50boe.
I recommend farming SoF for the Crimson Robe (and Choker) and then getting some Shard gear. You might want to have a look at the RoK-loot-thread, too.

Fairly easy item to get is Dooms Bracelet. Drops from Doom at his marass in Kunzar Jungle. He is rootable and respawns every 100-110 mins or something like that. Got both crit and spell dmg. The shard at JW docks drops a nice pair of shoulders too. IIRC they are called Symbol of the Eaten. That mob needs a small grp or a kiter/stunner though.

Oh, and pick up as many shards and RoK quest items as you can along the way.
