The problem is that I don't see anything on the horizon worth mentioning. I'm having a blast getting back into UO, but the population there is dwindling.

Its a sad thing when you'd rather just never log in again than expect something decent in the future. Just uninstall the client, smash your CDs, and never come back to this site again is the only advice I can think of.

I don't think EQ2 is capable of having a decent future.

It depends on what you mean by "decent."

It still makes enough money to justify its existence, but at the cost of selling its soul to keep pace with WoW.

You can't always make a good game if you want to be successful. Look at how many key hunting FPSes get made every year. The developers at one point probably cared about things like integrity, but eventually wised up to the fact that they have to feed their kids.

My hope is that in the near future, the MMO scene will become so saturated that it will no longer make sense to make games that do everything, because then you spread yourselves too thin. And then, hopefully, we'll have a bunch of niche games coming out that 100% focus on a selected group of people. Such as the MMO called "Fury" (Fury - Online role playing game (RPG) with PvP combat) which is an MMOPVP game focused 100% on pvp, and they excel at it. There is no PVE, and it combines many solid aspects from MMO's with many aspects of FPS games, such as the fast paced games.

It's completely niche, and anyone who is really into that type of game will have a lot of fun.
