Class roles in WoW
I have been thinking about checking out WoW (play EQ2) and it looks like some of the classes have some pretty diverse roles compared to what EQ2 classes do. In EQ2 if ur a wizard you dps, thats it, but it looks like in WoW a druid can heal and tank, a shaman can heal and dps, warrior can tank and dps, pally can tank, heal and dps? Is this correct? Also in end game what is the EQ2 equivalent of the desired group/raid classes like bards and plate/chain healers.

Re: Class roles in WoW
Druid Tank Heal Ranged DPS Melee DPS
Hunter Ranged DPS
Mage Ranged DPS
Paladan Tank Heal Melee DPS
Priest Heal Ranged DPS
Rogue Melee DPS
Shaman Heal Ranged DPS
Warlock Ranged DPS
Warrior Tank Melee DPS
Deathknight Tank? Melee DPS
If you need more info on the clases just post here. Most of the classes can only do one of each at one time. For example if you heal spec a paladin he's not going to be a great tank and if you spec him to tank he won't be a great healer etc.

Re: Class roles in WoW
yes, there is variation in class roles.
essentially, when you choose a class, you choose a playstyle. then, through your talents (which is the WoW version of eq2 achievements) you define your specific role. for some classes, your role is the same regardless of spec, but the different talent builds allow for some variation in how you accomplish things. i'll list what i know.
druid
base class: uses mana, caster. heals, damage spells, buff.
restoration: healing talents, including healer form (tree of life)
feral combat: melee dps and tanking talents, focusing on cat (dps - rogue) and bear (tank - warrior) forms. (in cat, you have an energy bar similar to rogues, and in bear you have a rage bar like warriors)
balance: caster dps talents. caster dps form (moonkin)
hunter
base class: mana, ranged dps, pet (captured). traps, feign death.
beast mastery: pet-centered talent build.
marksmanship: ranged attack talents.
survival: survivability and general "utility" talents (i.e. trap mastery).
mage
base class: mana, caster dps. int buff, crowd control (polymorph)
arcane: arcane damage. "utility" talents (slow, armor increase, added int, etc).
fire: fire damage. fire, flames, and carnage.
frost: frost damage. survivability talents. this is usually the "pvp" branch for mages, since it offers the most in terms of survivability once an opponent reaches you, as well as offering a snare or your main nuke and improved use of your root skill.
paladin
base class: mana, tank/healer/melee dps. buffs.
protection: tanking talents.
holy: healing talents.
retribution: dps talents.
priest
base class: mana, healer. stamina buff.
discipline: buffs and "utility" talents.
holy: healing talents.
shadow: dps talents.
rogue
base class: energy, melee dps. stealth, crowd control (sap)
assassination: poisons and daggers talents.
combat: melee combat, weapon specialization talents.
subtlety: stealth and sneaking talents.
shaman
base class: mana, caster. totems.
restoration: healing talents.
elemental: caster dps talents.
enhancement: melee dps talents.
warlock
base class: mana, caster, pet (summoned).
affliction: DoT shadow damage talents.
demonology: pet talents. stronger tank pet.
destruction: one-shot shadow and fire damage talents.
warrior
base class: rage, tanking/melee dps.
protection: tanking talents.
fury: dual-wield dps talents.
arms: weapon specialization, "utility" talents.
death knight
base class: rune power, tanking/dps?
i haven't played in wotlk yet to know anything else about dk's right now. :P
notes:
the energy bar maxes at 100 (unless you have talents, etc to make it more) and regenerates rapidly. energy attacks usually cost a good chunk of energy, which generally makes chaining arts together endlessly impossible. however, the rapid regeneration makes for endless sustainability of dps.
mana regenerates slowly while not casting. there are some talents, etc that allow for mana regeneration during combat, but it still doesn't match the regeneration rate of energy. mana pools grow with stats and spells generally use small portions of the bar at a time, so you can cast and cast until you run out, but when you're out (after potions, mana-regen spells and such) you just have to wait. drinking out of combat makes your mana regenerate faster.
rage is generated when you take damage or deal damage, and when out of combat, it gradually drains. warrior melee arts, when activated, are applied to their next melee attack (as opposed to being used when activated, like rogues).
again, i dunno about death knights, so i'm not sure how rune energy works.

Re: Class roles in WoW
I don't find my Death Knight to be a very good tank, but he sure can pump out the damage(unholy spec). As it stands right now, I do more damage on my Ret Pally than on my Death Knight, but I have better gear on my Pally. I was able to tank better when my Pally was Prot than I have been able to in any of the specs on my Death Knight, they hold aggro fine, but I was able to take more damage on my Pally as a Prot spec. Maybe I am just more used to playing a Pally, but I do more damage as Ret and tanked better as Prot than I can do in any spec on a DK. I havn't played my Rogue since the expansion came out so I can't comment on that.

Re: Class roles in WoW
Yeah that's why I put the ? after I listed them as a tank. They seem to tank like brawlers in the sense that they can do the elite stuff fine but the raid content may be a little difficult.
