I say merge em. There's sometimes lag in zones with hardly anybody in them, so the lag isn't caused from the number of people there.

It's because the zones aren't on individual servers/clusters, they're shared, several zones per server. S'why you sometimes get lag in an empty zone, because the alternates on that particular server are full.

That's what I heard a lot, but I've yet to see any proof/anyone who would know for sure say that.
Also, I've seen an mmo with multiple zones support roughly 200 concurrent players at 3-5% CPU (peak) on a single-core Pentium IV...
Granted there's a lot more mobs/npcs/etc in EQ2 than in the game I'm talking about, but...
